*Skiing Trip 2018*

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are planning a five/six night school trip to the Italian Alps in March 2018. This tour is primarily a skiing trip but we hope to include cultural activities in the Milan area also. The tour is open to 4th Year students for the 2017/2018 academic year. The cost of the tour will be approximately 899 euro. We are currently awaiting confirmation on airline seat prices.

The places on the tour will be allocated as per our School Trips Policy. This includes full payment of Transition Year fees on or before the dates we have already communicated to you.

Payment of deposit does not guarantee inclusion. The deposit of 150 euro will be due on Friday 31st of March. A second deposit of 250 euro will be payable before the end of the current academic year.

Could I also take this opportunity to inform parents that due to new aviation regulations:

Any school wishing to organise a school tour abroad must do so using a licensed tour operator or travel agent to arrange the travel package including accommodation and other services. All monies must be paid directly to the tour operator or travel agent, not to school staff or event coordinator.

This means that parents will be paying directly to our school tour operator, The School Tour Company. This payment can be made at the following link http://www.schooltour.ie/payment/ with the following code: 1304221

Lavarone is situated between the plateaux of Folgaria and Luserna, The Lavarone altopiano comprises about twenty boroughs, the most important of which are Chiesa, Gionghi and Cappella. The Ski Center Lavarone is located in Trentino. It is a new ski resort, which offers its guests the opportunity to discover the taste of skiing immersed in a spectacular natural paradise.

One of the significant strength of Lavarone Ski Center is the fact that guests can walk to the bottom of the slopes and reach the top of Alpe Vezzena (1600 m), near Asiago in Veneto Region. Also, the wide range of slopes is suitable for any skiers.

Snow at Lavarone Ski Center is ensured thanks to its technological programmed snow-making system (100%). For those guests located far from the access to the slopes, we provide an integrated system of transportation. By buying multiday and seasonal ski-passes, guests can explore and ski other ski centres in the proximity.

Intrepid freestyle skiers will have fun in the “Avez del Prinzep” snow-park.

History

Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna are three different communities which have in common historical experiences: the Cimbro-German colonization (X-XIII centuries) and the Great War (1915-1918) fought on the Trentino-Veneto front. To testimony this tragic event there still exist many Austro-Hungarian fortifications, the so called “Emperor fortresses”.

Language

Until the beginning of the twentieth century the people of Lavarone spoke Cimbrian, an ancient German dialect, this is still spoken in this region.

Lavarone’s official language is Cimbrian, but almost everyone speaks Italian. German is widely spoken too. English is also spoken by those involved in the tourism industry.

Après-ski

Après ski locally is quiet and informal throughout this beautiful, relaxing valley, however the après ski in Chiesa is lively and there are dozens of bars and restaurants.

Ski

Lavarone is a medium sized ski resort with 15 ski lifts that offers skiers access to 23 pistes (3 red, 19 blue & 1 black). The resort is a paradise for beginners and intermediate skiers. For instance, slopes are connected via blue runs allowing beginners and children to ski around the entire mountains.

Students represent Ireland in Netball

Congratulations to Karimah Zaiter and Sara Simons who were selected to play for Ireland on the u-17 Netball team. The girls played Switzerland, Dubai and Gibraltar in a tournament held in Belfast. Two other students made the training squad but were unfortunate not to make selection. Well done to them also; they were Laoise Kennedy and Robyn Geoghegan.

We wish the girls all the best for the future in the sport.
